Being together with each other and sharing what we have in common instead of what makes us different is vital for democracy!
It can be hard to build community in the age of endless scroll, political divisiveness, and the everyday busy-ness of life. But there is nothing more important than coming together to share experiences, to learn, to grow, and to change our world for the better.
That is why Let’s Fix This is committed to building and strengthening community organizations and individual relationships.
We have two exciting community building projects that we are working to expand throughout the state:
DEMOCRACY DRINKS
Our monthly gathering event where people can come together to be in connection with each other and chat about life and whatever issues are facing their community.
The goal is to connect people with each other and to re-connect friends that have lost touch.
Thanks to our amazing volunteers and community partners, Democracy Drinks events are popping up around the state.
If you want to host a Democracy Drinks in your area, we’d love to help! Pick a day, time, and location, and then just contact us and we’ll create a Mobilize event link so that you can start texting and inviting people!
Some helpful tips to get you started:
Check local calendars for conflicting events (impossible to please everyone, but maybe avoid OU football game days if you’re in Norman for example)
Post on social media and send it to friends. Word of mouth is everything here. (Tag @letsfixthisok so we can share it, too!)
Make it interactive. Plan either a very limited program (5-10 minutes) just enough to get people talking about the subject, whether it’s education, the economy, immigration, healthcare, voting, or anything!
Potlucks for the People
Love your community but not sure how to get involved?
Want a reason to connect with friends and neighbors?
Think meals are better shared?
Great, us too!
The purpose of Potlucks for the People is to promote curiosity across differences, build community, and maybe even give our crockpots some exercise. Civic engagement and social engagement need each other to flourish. By signing up to host friends, family, and neighbors for a simple potluck, you are doing your part to build a community that sticks together and works together.
We’ll provide a Potluck Host Toolkit. You provide venue and a main dish for 4-8 guests. Let’s build an engaged community in Oklahoma one bite and one conversation at a time.
